📝What is TARA?
TARA (Test of Academic Reasoning for Admissions) is a brand-new admissions test launching in 2025 for students applying to certain UK universities. It doesn’t test subject knowledge but instead focuses on skills that show how you think, reason, and communicate.
The aim of TARA is to give universities a fairer way to assess students beyond grades—especially for competitive courses.
Who Needs to Take TARA?
- In its first phase, University College London (UCL) has confirmed TARA for several undergraduate courses, including:
- Computer Science
- Social Sciences
- Data Science and Society
- European Social and Political Studies
- Management Science
- AI, Robotics, and related programs
Other leading UK universities may adopt TARA in future admission cycles, so students applying for 2026 onwards should keep an eye on updates.
Structure of the TARA Exam
The exam is divided into three compulsory modules:
- Critical Thinking (40 minutes, 22 questions)
- Tests your ability to understand arguments, identify assumptions, and evaluate evidence.
- Problem Solving (40 minutes, 22 questions)
- Focuses on reasoning with numbers, logic, and patterns.
- Writing Task (40 minutes, 1 essay)
- Choose one of three prompts and write an essay (around 750 words).
- This section is not scored numerically but is reviewed by admissions tutors.
Scoring System
- Critical Thinking and Problem Solving: Each scored on a scale of 1.0–9.0.
- Writing Task: Not given a numerical score, but universities carefully read your essay to judge clarity, reasoning, and written communication.
